The Milwaukee Bucks were primed to make a run toward another NBA championship. NBA experts agreed as well as the Bucks were installed as the odds-on favorite to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

However, the Miami Heat had other plans and shook up the entire NBA with their impressive play as they ousted Milwaukee from the first round of the NBA Playoffs in five games. Afterward, Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo admitted that his team got too comfortable with where they were after the regular season and overlooked the Heat.

Looked too far ahead

Did the Bucks take the Heat too lightly? After all, this was a Heat squad that got into the Playoffs by the skin of their teeth, beating the Chicago Bulls in the final game of the Play-in tournament. Then, in Game 1, they lost their second-leading scorer, Tyler Herro, for the rest of the Playoffs due to a broken hand.

Did Milwaukee look too far ahead and, in the process, overlooked a Heat squad that began building its confidence after winning Game 1 on the Bucks’ home floor? As Giannis commented, the Bucks set their eyes on winning the NBA title and perhaps forgot that part of the process meant defeating the eighth-seed first.

“They were playing to beat us, and we were playing to win a championship. We were a little bit ahead of ourselves, to be honest,” said Giannis.

Just a bad night overall

The Bucks have the offseason to dissect what went wrong, but they’ll have to examine the Game 5 loss from all angles. Giannis, though, kept his assessment of the loss really simple, saying:

“Ball did not go in,” Antetokounmpo said. “Simple as that. Got to my spot. I wasn’t able to make shots. That’s pretty much it. If I had made the shots, it would be a different case.”
