Giannis Antetokounmpo proclaims the NBA is Victor Wembanyama's if he stays healthy
Although the NBA still has numerous superstars carrying the torch, searching for the next generational talent is never-ending. In recent years, names like Luka Doncic and Zion Williamson have emerged as frontrunners for this title. However, there's a new name on the horizon that has basketball fans and even NBA players buzzing with excitement: Victor Wembanyama.
Born in France, the San Antonio Spurs rookie stands at an astounding 7-foot-4 at only 20 years old. Many experts believe he has the potential to revolutionize the game of basketball with his unique combination of size and skill. But it was Giannis Antetokounmpo who recently made headlines by proclaiming Wembanyama as the future of the NBA if he stays healthy.
The league is his
Giannis is a two-time league MVP with an NBA title across his name. That said, he knows what’s needed to reach the highest level of success in this league. And according to him, Wembanyama has what it takes.
"As long as Victor is healthy, the league is his," Antetokounmpo said.
Although LeBron James remains as incredible as ever at 39 years old, there’s no denying his approaching retirement. This leaves the door open for a new superstar to emerge and take over the league in the future, and Wembanyama could be just the player to do it.
"He's close to the end of his career but we have to deal with this problem now moving forward," Giannis added.
Wemby has played 49 games this season, averaging 20.5 points, 10.4 rebounds, and a league-leading 3.2 blocks per game.
Giannis has faith in Wembanyama’s abilities
In a way, Antetokounmpo may see a little bit of himself in the young center. A player coming from overseas with a unique skill set and the potential to dominate the NBA. Giannis faced doubts when he was drafted as a young man from Greece, but he has since silenced all critics and become one of the best players in the league.
"As long as Victor is healthy, he's going to accomplish everything. He's going to be a champion, be an MVP in this league, do all the things, the goals he has set for himself. That's pretty much it," Giannis asserted.
Another former league MVP, Kevin Durant, concurred with Giannis’ assessment of Wembanyama, saying that the youngster is only getting more comfortable playing NBA basketball. When he fully comes into his own, the league better watch out.
"He's only getting more comfortable as time goes on. It's just insane how dominant he's going to be as he gets more comfortable in the game," Durant said.
"Luckily, I'm on my way out, so I won't have to deal with it too much. You just see him settling in game after game after game, and it's going to be a joy to watch."
