Derrick Rose on the time he faced off against Patrick Beverley in high school - "Smacked us by 20"

In his senior year, Beverley posted eye-popping numbers of 37.3 points, eight steals, six assists, and six rebounds.

It may be hard to believe now, but there was a time when current Chicago Bull Patrick Beverley was a hotshot. If you don’t believe this, you can ask former league MVP and Bulls legend Derrick Rose, who vividly remembers how happy he was to get past Beverley, who starred for Marshall High School in the Windy City.

Rose’s junior year

Rose was a junior in high school at Simeon when he won a state championship. However, the road to the title was far from easy, as he knew he had to get past Beverley and Marshall High School.

In his senior year, Beverley posted eye-popping numbers of 37.3 points, eight steals, six assists, and six rebounds.

Rose’s team was even routed by Beverley’s squad by a sizable margin, said Rose.

“Smacked us by 20,” he shared. “Talking some big crap like he does now.”

Rose and Simeon, though, got the best of Beverley and Marshall in the state tournament, which paved the way for Rose to defend their high school state title by defeating O'Fallon High School 77–54. The normally-reserved Rose could not help but become elated after their win over Beverley’s team.

“Sweet after the way they got us,” Rose recalled.

Different paths

The two players eventually went through different paths. Rose was eventually drafted first overall by the Chicago Bulls before becoming a Rookie of the Year, a three-time All-Star, and the youngest MVP in league history. Though now a Bull, Beverley went through a long and winding road that took him to Ukraine, Greece, and Russia, before finally making it to the NBA in 2012 with the Houston Rockets.

Beverley has also played for the Los Angeles Clippers, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Los Angeles Lakers, but they traded him to Orlando at the trade deadline a few weeks ago. The Magic then bought his contract out, leaving Beverley to sign with his hometown team, the Bulls.
