The Cavs Still Haven't Lost When This Happens

The Cleveland Cavaliers have a perfect record in overtime this season.

The Cleveland Cavaliers found themselves down double figures on Monday night as they took on the Boston Celtics. However, the Cavs were able to get themselves back into the game in the fourth quarter after a couple of missed free throws from Grant Williams and an impressive defensive effort.

Just like that, the Cavs and Celtics were headed to overtime. This is a place that Cleveland has been to many times before in 2023.

Not only have the Cavs played in numerous overtime games this season, but they also haven't lost in one yet. In fact, they're 7-0 when this happens.

Their overtime games include:

  • 10/23 vs. Wizards 117-107
  • 10/28 @ Celtics 132-123
  • 11/2 vs. Celtics 114-113
  • 11/18 vs. Hornets 132-122
  • 12/17 vs. Mavericks 100-99
  • 1/2 vs. Bulls 145-134
  • 3/6 vs. Celtics 118-114

Yes, you read that correctly. Cleveland has beaten the Celtics three times in their seven overtime victories. This is the first time since the 2004-05 season that an opponent has had three OT wins against the same team in one season. That year it was Indiana who bested the Heat on numerous occasions.

It takes a ton of talent to win three of your four games against a team such as Boston, but it's even more impressive when it comes in this fashion.

The Cavs have really been phenomenal in overtime. In overtime, Cleveland is averaging 11.7 points while shooting 46.8 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from behind the arc. They're also collecting just about one steal and giving up one turnover in the additional five minutes.

There's been quite a bit of criticism that the Cavs are unable to close out close games this season. This has certainly been warranted at times too. But this overtime record and stats show that Cleveland has it in them to closer it out when it matters. They just need to do it consistently.
