The final regular season award was handed out on Tuesday night. The biggest of them all. The NBA's Most Valuable Player.

The MVP went to Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid who put together a dominant season. He averaged 33.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists a game. That's not to mention the impact he had on defense too.

Embiid winning the award is well deserved and some may even consider it long overdue.

However, not far behind Embiid in the voting was a representative from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Donovan Mitchell was a name that was thrown around among voters as he finished sixth in the MVP race. He received one fourth-place vote and 27 fifth-place votes.

He may not have been a true contender to win the award, but his contributions this season didn't go unnoticed.

The players that finished above him were Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jayson Tatum, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in that order.

Mitchell put together a career year in his first season with the Cavs. He put up a career-high 28.3 points per game and tied a career-high shooting 38 percent from behind the arc. His over-field goal percentage of 48 percent is also the best he's had in his six-year NBA career.

The Cavaliers finished 4th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 51-31. This is the best record the team has put together since the 2016-2017 season when the team had the same record. A lot of this success was a direct result of Mitchell as he proved to be the All-Star Cleveland gave up a lot to get before the season started.

Mitchell and the Cavs had their season come to an early end after losing to the New York Knicks in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. They only won a single game and Mitchell was hard on himself for his performance in the series.

This will be great fuel for the Cavs to use as they prepare to come back next season and prove they belong as a true contender in the NBA.
