Cavs Pursuing Former James Harden Teammate To Fill Final Roster Spot

With one spot left, the Cavs are still looking for some wing help.

In this story:

After acquiring Peyton Watson, the Cavs also brought in Cam Whitmore in the deal. As they wait to either waive him or offload him to another team, the roster remains full. But an open spot should be coming soon, as the decision to move the 2023 1st-round pick seems certain.

Once they do that, they will have one more player to add. Whether it’s a forward or a big man, it should be somebody that can help fill things out and give them depth.

One of the names they are rumored to be looking at was a teammate of guard James Harden with the Nets. Let’s dive in.

Evaluating Bruce Brown’s Fit with Cavs

A key part of the 2023 Nuggets championship, Bruce Brown has proven to be a very valuable role player during his NBA career. While playing with the Nets, he played as a small-ball forward that could attack and be a playmaking hub for the team. During his brief time with all of the Pacers/Raptors/Pelicans, he continued to be a solid option.

And his return to Denver last season saw a solid year in productivity in a return to a squad he formerly found success. Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com reported that he is in play as an addition via free agency. He could be a nice option for Cleveland on both ends. The three-point shot remains a bit inconsistent, but he can clean the glass effectively and swing the rock effectively.

Brown isn’t amazing at any one thing, but is decent at many of them. His chemistry with Nikola Jokic played a significant part in his return in 2025-26. And in addition to having logged time with Harden, he previously teamed up with Jarrett Allen. He is a strong lob thrower who knows how to get it to the bigs. More than any of the players available to the Cavs that they are considering.

A True Winner

Bruce Brown brings serious playoff experience to the table here. He was the sixth man on the Nets team that was upset by the Bucks in 2021. He has the title run and win with the Nuggets. Having played on the big stage, he can be another voice of reason for this squad. And finishing up with teammate teamups… he logged time with Thomas Bryant in Denver.

Brown is a bit of a swiss army knife that knows what the moment calls for. While either of Nick Richards or Victor Oladipo could be solid additions, this is another very viable option. It is a bit surprising that we’re in late August and he is unsigned, but this is where things stand.

Should the Cavs pull the trigger on getting Whitmore off the roster, look for Brown to be a legitimate candidate to join.
