In an article, ESPN wrote, "The NBA has granted the Memphis Grizzlies a $12.4 million disabled player exception for the season-ending injury to star guard Ja Morant, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Wednesday. The Grizzlies have until March 11 to use the exception, which allows a team to trade for or claim a player who is in the final year of his contract or sign a free agent to a one-year deal."
This creates an interesting opportunity for Memphis, because while whoever they acquire with this Disabled Player Exception is unlikely to elevate their playoff chances, it could be somebody they choose to keep around next season once Morant returns.
Understanding that this season is likely out the window, the Grizzlies must now focus on constructing their roster with a focus on next season. This means bringing in players that are seemingly good fits next to Morant, which is what the Grizzlies could use this Disabled Player Exception for.
As ESPN reported, the Grizzlies can "trade for or claim a player who is in the final year of his contract or sign a free agent to a one-year deal" which of course does not guarantee that player sticks around next season, but that will likely be the Grizzlies' goal.
