The Miami Heat’s 2023 Finals run was both a blessing and a curse.

Of course, fans got to witness their team in the biggest games of the year after a disappointing regular season. At the same time, the expectations for next year are massive, and Miami’s overachievements may create a higher standard for them this season.

Having high expectations can be good because it means people have an elevated standard. However, Miami's current squad may not have the pieces to satisfy those expectations.

The biggest issue is personnel. Miami was able to win with players like Gabe Vincent and Caleb Martin, who were solid performers but aren’t headliners that can replicate consistent high-level performances. The Heat struggling to acquire Damian Lillard is an illustration of their lack of true assets to trade. A package of Kyle Lowry and Duncan Robinson isn't going to be enough to get a certified superstar. Tyler Herro is the most valuable asset Miami has, but Portland doesn't need another young shooting guard.

The Heat can clinch a fourth championship by acquiring Lillard. But their title aspiration reside on this trade because their chances are slim otherwise. The Milwaukee Bucks re-signed most of their team from last season while the Celtics added Kristaps Porzingis.

Miami can't just coast on momentum anymore, especially as the defending Eastern champions. They will now have a target on their back, requiring improvements to counter these opponents.

So if they get Lillard, they will probably need a championship to exceed last season. Otherwise, no.
