Former Miami Heat guard Gabe Vincent claims he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers to "join a contending team and compete for championships."

He is a California native, meaning this move allows him to be closer to home and play for an "iconic franchise."

Vincent went undrafted in 2018 before spending two seasons in the G League. He was picked up by the Heat in 2020. He has played the last four seasons in Miami as a role player before breaking out in this year’s playoffs. During their historic Finals run, Vincent started all 22 games. He averaged 12.7 points and 3.5 assists while shooting 37.8 percent from the arc.

Vincent owes much of his success to the Heat’s organization for giving him an opportunity to succeed, making this comment feel like a low blow. Last season, the Lakers were swept by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals. After losing to the Nuggets in the Finals, the Heat can raise their championship hopes if they acquire Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard.

It is understandable that Vincent would prefer to be closer to home. The Lakers are considered an "iconic" franchise, having tied for the most championships of all time with the Boston Celtics

However, this does not justify Vincent’s unnecessary and illogical claim that he left the Heat to compete for championships.
