The Miami Heat are now on the verge of participating in the play-in tournament for the first time.

The Brooklyn Nets defeated the Detroit Pistons Wednesday, meaning the Heat's chances of securing the No. 6 seed are dwindling. Mikal Bridges led the Nets with 26 points.

“We just had to stay locked in down the stretch," Bridges said. “We knew they made a big run against Miami last night, so we were expecting them to make it tough on us, too.”

With three games left, the Heat are 1.5 games behind the Nets in the Eastern Conference standings. The Nets own the tiebreaker, so the Heat would have win out and Brooklyn lose its final two games.

The Heat are in this position one year after earning the No. 1 seed before losing to the Boston Celtics in the conference finals.

The Heat play the Philadelphia 76ers tonight at Wells Fargo Center.
