The biggest story around the Miami Heat is trying to acquire Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard.

This has dominated the offseason and all news in South Florida sports. It may be turning the attention from other possible signings, including former Dallas Mavericks forward Christian Wood.

Wood’s defense is below average but he would be a solid offensive option for the Heat. Depending on the scheme, he could start in place of Kevin Love. Love’s veteran presence and contributions were certainly appreciated, but Miami needs consistent production. Wood averaged 16.6 points on 52 percent shooting last season, which could aid Miami’s last-place offensive ranking.

Even off the bench, he could be a factor providing depth. Miami was near the bottom in scoring and rebounding in the second unit. Players like Caleb Martin and Tyler Herro started several games, taking away from the productive depth Miami had in the 2021-22 season. Wood ranked top three in points and rebounds among bench players last year.

One concern about the veteran forward is his locker room presence. The Heat’s organization doesn’t entertain drama, so Wood could either benefit from a new start or be made an example.
