Hornets Candidate Jordi Fernández Accepts Head Coach Position With Brooklyn

Have Charlotte missed out on one of their primary head coaching targets?

After it was announced Steve Clifford was stepping down, Jordi Fernández was one of four candidates immediately linked to the position. Fernández has now accepted the Brooklyn Nets Head Coaching position yesterday evening. according to ESPN.

The other finalists for the Nets position were Suns assistant Kevin Young and former Bucks Head Coach Mikes Budenholzer. Young, who finished runner up to Frank Vogel for the Phoenix head coaching role last off-season, has now also missed out on the Nets role. According to reports ,Young was on the initial shortlist of the Hornets coaching vacancy and could still be under consideration.

At this point, it is unclear if Fernández interviewed with Charlotte before accepting the Brooklyn Nets role. Hornets VP of Basketball Operations Jeff Peterson worked for the Nets until February this year, suggesting he likely had an awareness of Brooklyn's interest in Fernández.

After Mike Budenholzer missed out on Brooklyn, could he be under consideration for the Charlotte job? For many fans, Budenholzer was the premier coaching option on the market but to this point no reports have linked him to the Hornets despite his ties to co-owner Rick Schnall. Budenholzer could be waiting for coaching casualties of this season's playoffs in hope for a team with better championship aspirations, or maybe he will pick up the phone to Charlotte.
