Austin Reaves Shuts Door on Potential Utah Jazz Free Agency Push

In this story:
The Utah Jazz might not have a chance to pursue LA Lakers guard Austin Reaves in this summer's free agency as once thought.
Instead, Reaves, who has been previously linked as a potential target for the Jazz later this summer, appears to have no desire to shake up his current situation.
ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel recently gave an update on the status of Reaves and his pending free agency in his latest rumor mill, noting that the Lakers guard has no intention of moving on from his current situation in Los Angeles.
"The general consensus around the league says the same for Reaves, who will be an unrestricted free agent once he opts out of his $14.9 million player option, with several rumored suitors already lining up. Despite teams being ready to throw a massive contract at Reaves in free agency, he holds no desire to leave the Lakers, sources told ClutchPoints."
Utah Jazz Unlikely to Sign Austin Reaves in FA
While it felt pretty unlikely that the Jazz would be the ones to win the Reaves sweepstakes this summer for other factors besides his personal preference, the report, if true, would put the nail in the coffin for Utah, or any other team to be within reach for his services at all.
Reaves has been in the midst of a career-best season with the Lakers when he's been on the floor. In 51 games, he's put together an average of 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists while shooting 49.0% from the field and 36.0% from the field.
As he enters this summer on just under a $15 million player option, that's a number he'll be able to decline to get a new long-term contract with a big pay raise instead. And with the state of this year's free agency class and the money available around the league, he's bound to collect a ton of interest.
No matter where he ends up, he'll be in for a nice pay raise. However, of anyone in the hunt, Lakers appear the most likely to retain him of anyone on the market. As long as Reaves has mutual interest in getting that deal done, it's hard to expect him going elsewhere.

The Jazz, if even truly interested in Reaves, would've likely had to have their offseason align perfectly to aggressively pursue him on the open market.
Getting him on his expected lucrative deal would require a huge financial investment, and with a new contract already in the works for Walker Kessler, paying out Reaves, along with their other stars on the roster, plus a potential Keyonte George extension, was an increasingly unlikely scenario on paper in the era of the second apron.
Instead of Reaves being on the Jazz's radar, expect Utah to focus on retaining their defensive anchor in Kessler once he hits restricted free agency himself, stay focused on internal development of their budding young pieces, and roll into next season with a fully healthy core that can make noise in the West as a clear playoff team in 2026-27 as-is.
