Jazz G Collin Sexton Expresses Hunger to ‘Take Over’ Point Guard Role

In this story:
The starting point guard role for the Utah Jazz is a race that projects to be wide open entering the upcoming 2023-24 NBA season. Many talented candidates on the roster create a fascinating competition for who might rise to the top of the depth chart during training camps and preseason.
One aspirant to keep an eye on as we get closer and closer to the opener may be the electric G Collin Sexton. Coming to Utah as a part of the blockbuster trade to send Donovan Mitchell to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the former lottery selection is finally catching up to speed after previous meniscus and hamstring injuries derailed his past two years of play.
In an interview with Tony Jones of The Athletic, Sexton states that he is "100%" healthy headed into the next NBA season with big goals to accomplish on the horizon:
“I want to show that I’m back and healthy and 100 percent. Every year for me is important, so I don’t put too much pressure on myself from that standpoint. I’m my biggest critic, so I’m always going to have a lot of expecations for myself. I’ve been watching a lot of film this summer. I want to be able to try and take over the point guard role. I want to show them that I can run the show. I’m getting back into the groove of things. I think this season is going to be fun.”
He’s coming off a 2022-23 season with averages of 14.3 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists on effective shooting splits (50.6/39.3/81.9). Sexton will seek to reclaim his spot as the nightly 20-point scorer he was during his second and third seasons with the Cavaliers.
The soon-to-be six-year league vet continues as he displays confidence in his teammates and what he sees from this Jazz roster going into next year:
“We can be really good because we have a lot of talent. Everyone has to buy in for a common goal this season, and that’s to win. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about. If we win, everything takes care of itself. And if we win, everybody eats. So that’s the way that we all have to look at things going into camp and into the season.”
Sexton is accompanied by solid backcourt-mates with players like G Jordan Clarkson, G Talen Horton-Tucker, G Kris Dunn, and the incoming rookie G Keyonte George. The climb to be the lead point guard of this squad should be fierce, but it ensures a talented collective group for Will Hardy to work with in a tough Western Conference.
