The man who infamously has zero career three-pointers made throughout his time in the NBA, former Utah Jazz big man Rudy Gobert has been motivated to change the narrative on his shooting ability going into next season.

In his time preparing for the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup, we’ve seen some small glimpses of Gobert showing some improved confidence from beyond the arc, and the shots are surprisingly falling. With a few instances across recent NBA history of limited offensive big men transitioning themselves into a perimeter-centric league, Rudy could end up as the next in line to make the long-awaited jump.

In a recent clip from Gobert’s time in France, his shot-making ability is shown on full display, showing there might be more potential as a shooter that has met the eye from his past 10 NBA seasons.

Now, we have seen this story before, so it might be a bit too early to start considering Gobert a threat from outside the paint. Not too long ago, we saw a similar case of this off-season workout frenzy in 2022 with Andre Drummond.

Drummond claimed last summer was the offseason of his three-point revolution. He entered October with the mentality of "if I'm open I'm shooting it,” when he ended up shooting 0-3 from three for the season by the time April rolled around.

It’s a deadly virus that plagues the air during the NBA offseason: when back-to-the-basket bigs start acting like they’re Klay Thompson. Gobert might just be just another case of this summer sickness.

With an already-made three-pointer during his FIBA exhibition match, there is always the chance he proves the doubters wrong.

After a career start of 14 missed three-pointers, his second season with the Minnesota Timberwolves presents the perfect opportunity to show off some much-needed spacing in the massive frontcourt of him and Karl-Anthony Towns.

The next month of games during this FIBA World Cup might be the perfect scope to witness if Gobert’s distance is a product of hard off-season work or a social media-generated fluke.
