Through the first 22 games of the 2023-24 NBA season, the Utah Jazz have yet to reach their ideal consistency and success, cranking out an overall record of 7-15. However, individually, some guys on the team have started their season off pretty hot. One of the players that stands out is Kelly Olynyk.

While he’s resorted to a reserve role after starting each of the 68 games he played last season, his impact hasn’t suffered. He’s still averaging a line of 7.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.7 assists, along with just under a steal a game.

Where Olynyk really stands out is in his efficiency. It’s nothing we haven’t been aware of due to his proficiency in shooting the ball last season, but this year he’s taken it to the next step. He’s shooting an astounding 59.3% from the field, 48.6% from three, and 89.2% from the line.

For reference, it sits right around a TS% of 73.6%, currently the best percentage in the entire NBA for players who have played over 20 games in the season. The next closest entry is Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Cason Wallace, who comes in at 72.3%.

While there have been some hiccups for the Jazz on the offensive end, Olynyk has not been one of them. His shooting combined with his size and playmaking ability has made him a reliable rotational piece of this unit.

He has seen a bit of a decrease in shot attempts, going from 8.2 attempts per game in his 2022-23 campaign to 4.6 during this season. For the Jazz to find some improvement in their production scoring the ball (especially without Lauri Markkanen in the lineup), it may just come from giving the 10-year vet some more opportunity.

Olynyk and the Jazz will have the chance to bounce back after two straight losses on Monday, coincidentally against Wallace and the Thunder in Oklahoma City.
