A former member of the Utah Jazz might be hanging it up soon… or at least in terms of United States play. Longtime veteran point guard Ricky Rubio spoke in an interview recently with Liga Endesa about his NBA mortality, and how he sees himself moving forward in the association:

“My idea when I left Europe to play in the NBA is to come back one day.

I don’t know where I’ll be mentally and physically, and if I’ll still want to keep playing, but yeah my NBA days are coming to an end.”

It’s a statement from Rubio that’s a bit disappointing to say the least. In what would be concluding an 11-year career, he would be only 32 years old if he were to call it quits now.

Luckily, Rubio still has 1-2 years remaining on his current contract, so we’ll likely see him play that out before making any decisions.

Rubio seems enticed to come back home to play in Spain where his basketball stardom originated. A move back to Spain would be a sensible one for Rubio, allowing him to play in front of a home crowd back in the country he grew up in.

With the future of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ roster being murky at this point in the offseason, we may see Rubio get sent to a new franchise in order to play out the rest of his contract. After playing in only 33 games and averaging about 5 points per, there may not be much priority to keep him on the roster into next season.

Rubio played from 2017-2019 with the Jazz, averaging over 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists during his time in Salt Lake City. With two of his three total playoff appearances coming with the Jazz, it’s safe to safe some of his best years were while wearing a Utah jersey.

The future of Rubio in the NBA is up in the air. However, as long as he’s not a surprise cut, fans will be able to see him on the floor a bit longer before he calls it a wrap.
