Some of the best players around the league could be on the move as soon as next season, according to a report from an NBA insider. Looking at both how some of the brewing narratives in the NBA have developed over this past season, along with the newest Collective Bargaining Agreement agreed upon; this creates a potential thunderstorm of NBA movement across the league.

ESPN’s Zach Lowe detailed some new CBA implications that will surround the league and its front offices on The Lowe Podcast:

"This is all prelude to I think the next year in the NBA could be an unbelievable period of superstar and star player movement because you've just got a lot of sort of roiling situations. You have one year left before the really harsh trade rules kick into place after the 2023-24 season where teams over the second apron, like the Clippers, for instance, cannot even aggregate salaries. They can't add up money to bring in a big money player. That's starting after next season."

The newest CBA that was agreed upon earlier this year will inevitably have a huge impact around the association. Rules are now coming into place making it even harder for teams to spend money over the cap by adding an additional tax apron to where teams can be taxed heavier as a result.

Teams like the Golden State Warriors, who are notorious for having a massive payroll will have to keep up with the new CBA, possibly leading to some drastic changes across their roster. Other small market teams that struggle to compete with those like the Warriors, instead, will benefit from these adjustments.

Adding to this, every NBA offseason comes with a ton of players trading and switching teams, so this just adds to some of the chaos we could be in for. Rumors are already starting despite us not even reaching the NBA Finals. For example, as ESPN’s Tim MacMahon on The Lowe Pod described James Harden’s situation, saying he “think[s] he's coming,” to the Houston Rockets.

Here’s just a few other situations around the league that could have some traction if things don’t go as planned as soon as next year.

  • If Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks fail to make the ECF for three straight seasons, there could be some whispers surrounding the former MVP’s future.
  • Jaylen Brown’s future would have to come into question if the Boston Celtics fail to have any Finals success within the next two seasons.
  • Could Joel Embiid ask for his way out of the Philadelphia 76ers if his second-round woes continue?
  • Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks may find themselves at a crossroads if they fail to improve from this past season.
  • If Zion Williamson’s health fails to improve, his future with the New Orleans Pelicans could be in jeopardy.
  • Of course, Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks will be a situation of interest throughout all of next season.
  • And of course, Damian Lillard will always be in trade discussions until the Portland Trail Blazers get him a supporting cast.

With so much star talent potentially on the move across the next 12-16 months, the Utah Jazz front office has to be on close watch on every situation in the league. With the substantial assets the team is able to provide, investing a few of their surplus of draft picks into a high-impact player would have to be on the table.

The Jazz are in a fortunate spot among the league since they have so much draft flexibility. Even a hypothetical mega-trade with like... let’s say... five first-round picks wouldn’t exactly cripple the franchise’s future since they have so many on hand. Most other teams have way more risk involved; trading that kind of capital is mortgaging the entire team’s future.

Thankfully, the wise decisions to deal Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert has given Utah a unique advantage over opposing front offices. Jazz fans, however, will have to strap in for what could be a turbulent next two NBA offseasons as a result.
