Jazz Players FIBA World Cup Roundup: Game 2 Recap

In this story:
It’s been a busy weekend for Jazzmen in the FIBA World Cup. Jordan Clarkson, Simone Fontecchio, Kelly Olynyk, and Lauri Markkanen all saw action in what was each player's second game of the tournament.
Let’s dive in and take a look at how the Utah Jazz players faired.
Lauri Markkanen | Finland
Finland underwhelmed by losing their second game to Japan, 98-88. Despite having an 18-point lead in the second half, Finland was unable to hang on by getting outscored by 20 points in the last quarter.
The loss officially ends Finland’s chance to advance in the tournament. Markkanen was still able to put on quite a show with a 27-point and 12-rebound performance. Finland’s last game will be against Germany on Tuesday.
Jordan Clarkson | Gilas Pilipinas
Clarkson also lost for the second game in as many chances. This time it was against Angola, 80-70. Utah’s most tenured player was still able to fill up the stat sheet with a 21-point and seven-assist performance.
It’s been a tough showing from an efficiency standpoint for the former Sixth Man of the Year. Over the two games, Clarkson scored 49 points, but it took 45 shots to get there. Clarkson’s will face off against Germany on Tuesday.
Simone Fontecchio | Italy
The second-year Jazzman has shown out quite well on the international stage. However, Fontecchio’s thirteen-point performance wasn’t enough in his 87-82 defeat against the Dominican Republic.
Italy is 1-1 in group play and will need a win against Clarkson and Gilas Pilipinas to stay in the thick of it.
Kelly Olynyk | Canada
Olynyk is the first player to win his first two games in group play. On Sunday, Olynyk finished with 12 points and eight rebounds in a 128- 73 victory over Lebanon.
Canada, led by Olynyk, RJ Barrett, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, might be the biggest threat to taking Team USA out. Next up for Canada is Latvia on Tuesday at 7:30 MST.
Jazz starting center Walker Kessler’s second game will be on Monday when Team USA faces Greece.
