Could the trio of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić work? Well Irving seems to think so. According to Bleacher Report's NBA Insider Chris Haynes, Irving has reached out to James about the possibility of joining forces in Dallas. Now the trio being formed is very unlikely but that didn't stop NBA reporter Chris Broussard to wonder how Dončić may feel about Irving recruiting James to the team.

Now at first glance, the idea of the three players being on the same team seems appealing but Broussard is onto something. Before Irving even came to Dallas, the Mavericks were in fourth place among the Western Conference standings. Post Irving, Dallas dropped down to the 11th seed, ultimately missing the postseason.

Irving is now a free agent and seemingly wants to upgrade the roster. However, throughout their brief time together, it was clear that a Dončić/Irving pairing may not be the best option for on court success. Yes, they are explosive offensively but the Mavs got exposed on the defensive end. It was their downfall and there were times after the Irving acquisition that Dončić even talked about not having fun anymore.

Now, I won't put all the blame on Irving because nobody really knows what exactly Dončić was dealing with. But, the signs were there. Pre-Irving, Dallas was contending and coming off a run to the Western Conference Finals with Dončić leading the charge. Some of this was due to the team depth getting depleted in the Irving trade but still.

Dončić has shown the want to win and win at a high level. James would help provide that but this is Dončić's team after all. Bringing in a polarizing talent and personality like James would mean giving that up. Is Dončić willing to make that sacrifice? That is the big question that hangs over this highly unlikely, but technically possible move.

The Mavericks and Lakers both have a lot of questions that need to be answered this offseason and I'm certain that this isn't the last time we will hear these two teams mentioned together. Buckle up Laker fans, the offseason is here.
