Mavs Attempting to Sign Spencer Dinwiddie on Buyout Market After Raptors Trade

Spencer Dinwiddie was traded from the Brooklyn Nets to the Toronto Raptors before the trade deadline, and now that his contract has been bought out, the Dallas Mavericks are attempting to sign him as a familiar third ball-handler off the bench.

The Dallas Mavericks had a massive trade deadline day on Thursday, as they traded Grant Williams, Richaun Holmes, Seth Curry and draft capital in exchange for Charlotte Hornets’ P.J. Washington and Washington Wizards’ Daniel Gafford.

The Mavs’ two biggest needs — upgrades at the starting power-forward and backup center positions — were addressed by GM Nico Harrison, and now, with an open roster spot, the need for a third ball-handler could be addressed on the buyout market.

The Brooklyn Nets traded Spencer Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors on Thursday, and the team announced soon after that he has already been waived. Dinwiddie will hit the open market after clearing waivers, and given that he played the best basketball of his career in Dallas with Luka Doncic, a reunion would make sense. According to multiple reports, the Mavs will indeed pursue Dinwiddie.

In Dallas, Dinwiddie averaged 17.1 points and 4.9 assists while shooting career-highs 46.6 percent overall and 40.4 percent from deep. He was a key piece of the Mavs’ three-headed guard monster featuring Doncic and Jalen Brunson that made it to the 2022 Western Conference Finals.
