NBA Free Agency Rumor: Rockets Interested in Signing Mavs’ Dwight Powell?

With the Dallas Mavericks having added two new frontcourt pieces in Dereck Lively II and Richaun Holmes, Dwight Powell’s time in Big D may be over … but he could still stay in Texas.

With just five days remaining until NBA free agency begins, rumors are starting to heat up around the league as teams finalize their pitches to prospective free agents.

The Dallas Mavericks have been linked to several players in free agency and trade rumors — many in the sign-and-trade category — including Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green, Boston Celtics’ Grant Williams, Washington Wizards’ Kyle Kuzma, Denver Nuggets’ Bruce Brown, Philadelphia 76ers’ Tobias Harris and Phoenix Suns’ Deandre Ayton to name a few.

It’s clear that Mavs GM Nico Harrison wants a lot of changes to his team’s roster before next season begins, and given the frontcourt additions of Dereck Lively II and Richaun Holmes via two NBA Draft Night trades, Dallas might be saying goodbye to its current longest-tenured player — Dwight Powell.

According to a report from the Houston Chronicle’s Johnathan Feigen, the Houston Rockets have interest in signing Powell this summer. Given, Houston is interested in a vast number of free agents that likely rank above Powell, but Powell’s leadership and professionalism could benefit the Rockets’ culture.

Powell has been with the Mavs for nine seasons and has been Luka Doncic’s favorite pick-and-roll partner for the last five years. Although he’s limited, Powell’s effort will always give him a chance of getting minutes, whether it’s in Dallas or another city. If his time in Dallas is truly up, perhaps he can still stay in Texas when the dust settles.
