With NBA free agency on the horizon, the Dallas Mavericks, who were extremely active on draft night, will look to follow that up with a couple more meaningful transactions.

First, the Mavs must re-sign Kyrie Irving, and all signs are pointing to that happening soon after free agency opens. So, after that, what’s the next big move? Perhaps a surprise trade for Toronto Raptors star Pascal Siakam could be in the works.

According to a report from Sportsnet’s Michael Grange, the Mavs, along with the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Houston Rockets, New Orleans Pelicans and Sacramento Kings have called Masai Ujiri to ask about Siakam’s availability.

Out of all the Raptors’ trade assets, Siakam might make the most sense for the Mavs, as he’s in his prime at age 29. If the Raptors want to get what they can for the two-time All-Star and 2019 NBA champion before he could potentially leave them for nothing in free agency, the Mavs could present them with that opportunity.

In theory, the Mavs trading Tim Hardaway Jr., Maxi Kleber, Josh Green and their 2027 first-round pick in exchange for Siakam could work. Knowing how the Raptors’ front office has a reputation for being hard to negotiate with, this might not work for them, but parting with one of their best players is likely the only way they’d get that 2027 pick from Dallas.
