The Brooklyn Nets were recently linked up to Donovan Mitchell as a must-watch team to look out in the hunt for the All-Star guard.

The note can't be more interesting as Shams Charania of The Athletic recently reported that there is a possibility that Mitchell will be traded by the Cavaliers if he isn't able to ink a contract extension with them.

Mitchell remains under contract until next season, with the 2025-26 holding a player option. While he is now eligible for extension, Shams argued that there's no significant movement appearing yet for an extended partnership with the Cavs.

"Meanwhile, Donovan Mitchell's long-term future with the franchise looms large. He can sign a lucrative contract extension over the summer, but he could have last summer, and there was no movement toward a deal between the two sides. If he won't commit to the Cavs beyond the next season, the team would likely have to trade him."

Mitchell and the Cavs' current situation

The current scenario around Cleveland has been shaky. After a disappointing run last postseason, doubts have already whirled around the organization's competitive stand with Donovan Mitchell at the front.

Currently, the Cavs are sitting with a 13-12 record that places them in the ninth place of the East. Their current position in the Conference couldn't be more concerning, with both Darius Garland and Evan Mobley set to miss significant time.

With this, Spida, who is averaging over 27 points this season, will be required to carry a much heavier responsibility of leading the Cavaliers. What would unfold between him and the Cavs as they move along must be monitored — especially for the Nets — as these will heavily affect the extension situation of both sides.

A reasonable interest

The probable interest and observation of the Nets toward Mitchell's availability shouldn't be questioned. Despite being competitive already, the ball club remains on the lookout for an established star that can exactly fit their timeline and proudly banner the team's exciting program. Besides, Spida's explosive game and offense perfectly complement Brooklyn's dynamism and versatility.

Mitchell being dragged as one of the NBA stars that could be on the move is truly a subject that must be seized for the Nets. They have competitive assets and draft capitals, which can draw interest in the Cavaliers. Acquiring D-Mitch gives them an elite star who can provide a stronger contention push for years to come.

Only time can tell what will happen next, but Brooklyn certainly has a robust case to boldly present in chasing Mitchell.
