In preseason, the Nets had expectations of being a competitive team that could make some noise in the Eastern Conference. They lived up to that billing in the first 20+ games of the season, but Brooklyn has free-fallen into the lower side of the standings.

Recently, the Nets have struggled to get wins and are getting blown out by their opponents. However, they have some promising performances here and there that they could build from, but Brooklyn eventually falls into another rut. The losses have led to some calls for consistency, given the Nets have the talent to compete in the Eastern Conference.

The Nets need to make the postseason

Brooklyn’s season will be a disaster if they don’t make the Playoffs or at least the Play-In Tournament. The Nets do not have a pick at the 2024 NBA Draft, so they need some success to salvage this campaign.

Brooklyn could use a postseason run to make the organization more appealing to free agents and other players looking for a trade. Nets general manager Sean Marks is always looking for a big swing trade, and with the future draft picks from Phoenix still available, a potential blockbuster deal can happen involving the Nets.

That’s why the organization must compete for a spot in the postseason by having more consistent performances. Interim head coach Kevin Ollie maximized the team in a recent win against the Grizzlies, where everyone stood out. That is the level Ollie and the front office want to see from the Nets players, but they struggle to hit shots and defend properly.

Consistency helps the players develop

Most of the Nets’ core consists of younger players with room to grow. Cameron Thomas is the best example of this, as he’s only 22 years old and has improved his playmaking and shot selection.

Thomas isn’t the only young player developing, as you can see someone like Nic Claxton or Day’Ron Sharpe growing into their own and becoming vital players for the Nets team with their defense and rebounding. By giving the players confidence and a more consistent playstyle, the sky is the limit for Brooklyn.
