Just in time for the start of the regular season F Taurean Prince has signed a two-year, $29 million contract extension with the Brooklyn Nets before playing a single game for them.

The deal shouldn’t be much of a surprise since the Nets traded away F Allen Crabbe and two first-round picks to the Hawks in order to get Prince and only a second rounder in June.

Not to mention Crabbe was a key bench player for them, averaging 9.6 PPG and 3.4 RPG in 26.3 MPG in 43 games and 20 starts last season.

Prince is definitely an upgrade as a more athletic two-way player, which the Nets need right now, even more so since they are going to need every bit of help they can get during Kevin Durant’s red shirt year so to speak.

Last season Prince averaged 13.5 PPG, 3.6 RPG, shooting 44% from the field and 39% from behind the arc. In his preseason with the Nets he averaged 16.8 PPG, 3.2 RPG, shooting 62% from the field and 67% from behind the arc.

This season you can expect Prince to get a significant amount of playing time, not just because Durant will be out, but also because besides Wilson Chandler he’s the most experienced at the position amongst active players. Guys like Rodions Kurucs and the young and bigger guards will lean on him this season.

Going by the way Prince has played in the preseason he isn’t shying away from this and should fit right into that leadership role as the season gets going.

Luckily for the Nets leadership is something that they have going for them this year, at all of the positions too. Irving is a leader for the guards, KD, Prince and Chandler for the forwards and DeAndre Jordan for the big men. This will definitely come in handy since the roster is made up of a good mix of youth and experienced veterans.
