Ex-Pacers head coach Nate McMillan let go as head coach of Atlanta Hawks

McMillan coached the Pacers for four seasons

The Atlanta Hawks moved on from head coach Nate McMillan yesterday. The Hawks are 29-30 this season and are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

"I would like to thank Nate for his leadership and professionalism during his time with the Hawks. He is truly a class act, and we appreciate the graciousness and work ethic he brought with him every day," Hawks general manager Landry Fields said.

McMillan went 99-80 while running the Hawks, including a Conference Finals trip in 2021. He was promoted to head coach in the same season, replacing Lloyd Pierce. Pierce is now an assistant with the Indiana Pacers.

Prior to joining Atlanta's coaching staff as an assistant before his promotion, McMillan was the head coach for the Pacers. He guided Indiana to four playoff appearances and went 183-136 coaching the franchise.

Recently, when the Hawks visited Indianapolis, McMillan discussed the growth of Pacers center Myles Turner, who he coached for four seasons. He recalled his conversations with Turner about leadership from their time together, and he also praised the team's star player, Tyrese Haliburton.

"They're playing at a fast tempo," McMillan said of the 2022-23 Pacers. Rick Carlisle is now the head coach in Indiana. "They're playing together. You've got two youngins that are playing really well for them," McMillan added of Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin.

McMillan is 760-668 as an NBA head coach, and his 760 wins ranks 18th all time. He has guided his team to the postseason 11 times. Joe Prunty is the interim head coach for the Hawks as they search for the next permanent coach.
