Could the Detroit Pistons cut ties with Monty Williams soon?

On Sunday afternoon, the Detroit Pistons will wrap up a disappointing season.

With one final go-round against the San Antonio Spurs, Detroit will finish at 15-67 or 14-68. No matter what the outcome is, Detroit will head into a critical offseason, considering they’ve had a historically bad run in 2023-2024.

Performances like this tend to call for replacements across the board. For months, many have wondered about the job security of the team’s first-year head coach, Monty Williams.

While the Pistons banked big on Williams, following his departure from the Phoenix Suns, the investment hasn’t paid off. Is it just about time for the Pistons to cut ties early? It seems Williams is expected to get another shot.

According to a report from The Athletic, changes are still being considered as the regular season comes to its conclusion. However, when it comes to Williams, his job is expected to be safe for now.

“As for Williams, it appears as of now that he will be back next season, assuming he demonstrates that he can deliver significantly more progress in the development of its team and players,” wrote The Athletic’s James Edwards.

What about the team’s front office leader, Troy Weaver?

“Gores is considering hiring a president of basketball operations to have the final say on all basketball matters,” Edwards explained, via those in the know. “The Pistons haven’t had someone in that exact role since 2018.”

Maybe Weaver keeps his job, but finds his role reduced.

Either way, the Pistons can’t stand pat and run it back. They might not have the resources to become immediate contenders over night, but Detroit’s current rebuilding strategy hasn’t worked. With another high pick coming in, and plenty of cap space to add some difference-makers to the roster, the Pistons need to make sure the right people are in place to help build the team around its franchise player, Cade Cunningham.
