Detroit Pistons Make New Roster Addition Official

For the next ten days, the Detroit Pistons will have the services of the veteran center, Taj Gibson.

According to a team press release, Gibson has landed a 10-day contract with the organization, offering him an opportunity to join his sixth NBA team since entering the league as a first-round selection in 2009.

The Pistons will offer Gibson his second playing stint this year. Back in December, Gibson signed a one-year contract to join the New York Knicks for a second stint. Roughly one month later, he was waived.

Eventually, Gibson re-joined the Knicks on a 10-day contract and earned a second one when the first expired. Since then, Gibson hit the free agency market and waited patiently for a call from another team, which eventually became the Pistons.

This season, Gibson appeared in 16 games for the Knicks. He averaged ten minutes on the court, producing one point and two rebounds per game.

For the next five games, Gibson will be on board with the Pistons. Their first set of action will take place at home against the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night.

While Gibson is expected to suit up for the Pistons now that the signing is official, it’s unclear what role he’ll have, considering the circumstances.

Regardless of the inexperience Gibson has playing for the Pistons, the NBA veteran has plenty of games under his belt. Beginning his NBA career in 2009, Gibson appeared in 961 regular season games, averaging 23 minutes on the floor during that time.

While playoff experience isn’t all that valuable to the Pistons this season, Gibson’s 71 postseason appearances still look great on his resume.

If and when Gibson debuts for Detroit on Thursday against Brooklyn, the Pistons will join the Chicago Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves, Washington Wizards, and the Knicks in having Gibson compete for their squad.

The 38-year-old gets another opportunity to showcase how much he has left in the tank.
