On Thursday, Boardroom Hospitality, owned by Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant, announced that Austin Sports Club is set to open on Thursday, September 10, in downtown Austin. In partnership with Lobos Hospitality, the new dining and entertainment destination is designed as a contemporary take on traditional American athletic clubs.

In a statement received by Houston Rockets OnSI, Durant shared his thoughts on the new restaurant.

"Austin is an incredibly important place to me and I've wanted to have a space like Austin Sports Club to come back to for a long time. The team at Lobos has done an incredible job with hospitality in Austin, and that they understand the city I love so well was a big factor in this partnership."

Durant’s roots in Texas date back to 2007, when he was a freshman player for the Texas Longhorns. Now with the Rockets, the 16-time All-Star should expect a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the Houston area to Austin Sports Club.

Ties to Texas

At 37 years old, Durant is still considered one of the top players in the NBA. Last season, Durant averaged 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists over 78 games. He was named to the All-NBA Second Team and received an All-Star selection for his efforts.

Although the Rockets have had a relatively quiet offseason, Durant’s name continues to circulate in ongoing trade speculation. There are no reports, however, that suggest Houston’s front office is actively looking to trade the two-time NBA champion. The idea to move Durant should be ill-advised based on last season’s production and durability.

While Durant’s first year with the Rockets can be viewed as an individual success, Houston finished as the fifth seed in the Western Conference and was eliminated in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. This is generally viewed as a disappointing result for a franchise that should be looking to maximize its championship window.

The encouraging news for the Rockets is that two-time All-Star Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson have continued to make strides in development from year to year. Especially with Fred VanVleet returning from a season-ending injury, the Rockets have the potential to raise their ceiling in 2027.

Overall, the upcoming opening of Austin Sports Club could be viewed as another positive sign for Rockets fans hoping Durant’s remains with the team. At the least, he has made an effort to further integrate himself into the Texas community.
