SAN ANTONIO — De'Aaron Fox has grown substantially since his rookie year. He almost laughed at the thought.

"I'm a totally different guy than I was," said Fox, now 28 years old. "My game has changed, but my understanding of the game has also changed."

The former changed him from a speedy point guard prospect to a bona fide scorer with All-Star upside. The latter makes him a crucial part of the San Antonio Spurs' recent success behind Victor Wembanyama. As both a leader and player.

I'm able to help younger guys or my big, someone on the wing, with being able to play together," Fox explained. "I tell them what I see, and adjustments that we can make ... the biggest part is, once you understand the game, your voice comes after that."

Fox's burgeoning team will be without him in their first game since knocking off the Oklahoma City Thunder on Christmas Day. The star point guard is listed as OUT for the Spurs' home game against the Utah Jazz Saturday evening, citing left adductor tightness.

San Antonio remains confident in managing without him.

"Everyone will step up," Dylan Harper said. "We've proved that, if one of our key guys is out, we have enough depth to step up and take the challenge."

Fox finished his first Christmas Day slate with 29 points, four rebounds and three assists on 12-for-19 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 shooting from 3. Missing Saturday leaves nine more games Fox can miss this season to remain eligible for postseason awards.

The Spurs are riding an eight-game regular season win streak ahead of facing Utah, which is currently tied with the Dallas Mavericks just outside of the Western Conference Play-In Tournament. A win would keep Mitch Johnson's squad in sole possession of the No. 2 seed, but it isn't focused on that.

Rather, they want to keep winning. Even without Fox.

"We all carry some sense of confidence and some sense of: 'We're going to be OK,'" Harper said. "It's a big piece we're losing today, and we'll miss him ... but if we've got to pick up ... the load a little bit for a night, we're capable of doing that."

Tipoff between the San Antonio Spurs and Utah Jazz from Frost Bank Center is set for 7 p.m. Central Saturday evening.
