Former Suns Center JaVale McGee Listed as Underrated Offseason Signing

The former Phoenix Suns center was included in a recent ESPN article that listed under-the-radar signings.

The Phoenix Suns no longer have center JaVale McGee, as McGee opted for the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $17.2 million deal in the beginning stages of free agency.

Phoenix's depth behind Deandre Ayton undoubtedly took a hit, although the Suns are set to welcome back Bismack Biyombo and new addition Jock Landale.

"I just feel like the situation, it was a great team," said McGee in an interview with the Dallas Morning News.

"Obviously I had just played them in the playoffs and they had that playoff run, and knowing the abilities of Luka and the way he distributes the ball and players like that, I seem to really succeed with. And the fact that I was also coming here to be a starter was part of why I wanted to come here also."

McGee played admirably for Phoenix when he was on the court. In 74 games for the Suns, averaging 9.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in just under 16 minutes played.

Most of all, McGee was able to establish a rim protection presence in the paint that is hard to duplicate across the league.

The Mavericks are ecstatic to add him to the lineup, and understandably so. Many across the league feel as if McGee was an underrated signing of the offseason, which includes ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk, who casually slid McGee as an under-the-radar signing along with Malcolm Brogdon, De'Anthony Melton and Donte DiVincenzo.

"Christian Wood fills all the things Dallas was missing in the postseason -- a big man who can spread the floor and score -- if he's in the right frame of mind," said Youngmisuk. "He should be able to give Luka Doncic much needed help, and JaVale McGee will give them some much-needed rim protection."

Could McGee be the missing piece to Dallas' championship puzzle? Suns fans certainly hope not.

For those curious, the group of writers in the article also discussed which team Kevin Durant would begin the season with - all said Brooklyn.
