Suns Understand Significance of City Edition Jersey

They look great, but the meaning behind the Phoenix Suns' City Edition jerseys stretch far beyond appearance. Members of the team know that, too.

The Phoenix Suns have typically fielded some of the best uniforms in the NBA, although there's been a few close calls.

Whether it be the Valley jerseys or the recently donned throwbacks in nod to the 90's. Phoenix knows a thing or two about the mantra "look good, feel good, play good."

So when the team officially unveiled their City Edition jerseys, a unique uniform set that pays homage to Arizona's Native American heritage and people, most within the fan base weren't shy about sharing their admiration.

Their court matched the look, too.

After defeating the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday, the Suns are 1-0 in their new threads.

After the game, a few members of the team spoke on the uniforms and the special meaning they carry.

“There’s so much meaning behind it. I probably would take too much time talking about it but it certainly means a lot to us. As an organization, to be able to represent the people, the Native Americans that have been here for such a long time, we have an understanding that our fans and our fan base extends outside of these city lines," said Williams.

"And for us to be able to recognize that and to recognize the contributions of Native Americans in this city and throughout the state is a huge deal. When I got a chance to spend time with some of my Native American brothers and sisters when we did the photo shoot, you could feel the impression that our team has on that community and I was blown away by that day and I’ve studied American history and in particular Native American history.

"When I studied the Trail of Tears and The Indian Wars, I’m blown away at the resilience of your people and it’s great for us to be able to recognize the contributions of Native Americans in this state and throughout the country, but also I think we also need to recognize the resiliency and the grace that you all have shown our nation because there is a lot of wrongs that have been done to the Native American people in this country and I don’t see a lot of ill will or hate or bad motives and I don’t think that’s said enough.

"Sometimes, when you’re African American, we tend to only look racism and inequality from my perspective as an African American and I don’t think we take enough time to look at it from a Native American perspective so for us to be able to have the jerseys on tonight, I hope we do it more than tonight, but it says a lot about you all, your strength, your resiliency and your ability to show a ton of grace to a nation that was really, really tough on you all.”

“It was unbelievable, not only to play in it but have the chance to meet with all of them down at the court. Not only the jerseys, but we have a whole entire court. So getting the backstory allows us to wear it with great pride and great honor. I am glad we got the win in the first time wearing them. I think we wear them for the next three or four straight games, so I am looking forward to that also. I love the color, protection.”

“I was excited. It was dope learning the history behind it. I probably got taught in school about it, but I probably didn’t pay attention, but it’s interesting to learn how it was back then and it was pretty cool.”
