Former Phoenix Suns PG Cameron Payne could be on his way to the Minnesota Timberwolves, as the team is "kicking the tires" on Payne according to SKOR North's Darren Wolfson.

"The Wolves are kicking the tires at least internally on to me the best free agent point guard available Cameron Payne. But as of Friday morning, they have not extended him an offer. The Wolves had a couple point guards in for free agent workouts going back a few weeks."

Former Suns player Elfrid Payton was one of the point guards who was worked out by Minnesota, according to Wolfson.

Payne was recently released by the San Antonio Spurs after being traded from Phoenix previously in the summer. Payne arrived with a 2025 second-round pick and cash considerations for a 2024 second-round pick.

The Suns acquired Bradley Beal and Jordan Goodwin in a trade with the Washington Wizards, and Beal is expected to handle point guard duties with Goodwin as a backup after Chris Paul was sent packing.

Payne was waived by San Antonio so he could seek a bigger role on another team, though it seemed like he never wanted to leave the Suns.

“Man, I love Phoenix, bro, I miss Phoenix already,” Payne said on Instagram live after being traded.

“I wish I was in Phoenix still but hey, it is where it is, man. They’re trying to win a chip and I respect it. I feel like they could’ve won a chip with me though 'cause like, I’m tough.”

It wasn't easy for Phoenix to part ways with Payne either - according to general manager James Jones.

“(The Payne trade) was a part of a series of transactions that we made that we thought would give us roster balance and flexibility,” Jones said. “Cam was tremendous for us for the last three years, but we have changed the identity of our team."

Payne would backup PG Mike Conley in Minnesota.
