In this story:

Being the small market Oklahoma City is, the franchise has never used free agency as a method to make significant roster improvements. In fact, the Thunder has often used cap space in unorthodox ways to generate value outside of outright signing players.

That will likely be the case this summer too, even though OKC projects to have upwards of $30 million in space. Thunder GM Sam Presti was asked about his strategy in the offseason as it relates to having cap space, giving his thoughts on the scenario.

As expected, the Thunder won’t rule out any options. However, it sounds like previous strategies will remain and the team won’t make any big moves on the free agent market.

Maintaining cap flexibility is important for the Thunder, as that will allow for more creative moves in the next few years when the franchise is ready to make the big splash. Again, everything will be considered this summer but it sounds like Oklahoma City isn’t seeking out a significant signing. It’s also worth noting that a new CBA is set to affect the future of the league as well, which also makes it difficult to predict how the summer will unfold.

For Presti’s full response to the question he got at end of season interviews about free agency and cap space, watch the video above.
