Only the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks have a worse record over their last ten games than the Golden State Warriors do. Just 2-8 over their last ten, the Warriors have fallen to 3rd in the Western Conference; however, more concerning than their seed, is the negative trajectory they’re on as the season winds down.

As important as seeding can be in the NBA, and history confirms that it is indeed important, momentum entering the playoffs is also a necessary element for championship teams. Having played their best stretch of basketball back at the beginning of the season, this Golden State Warriors team is far removed from the peak of their momentum. Steph Curry recognizes this, but he won’t let his team give into a mentality that accepts it as normal.

“Giving into a losing mentality. We’re not that team. I’m not gonna let us be that team,” Curry said following the loss to the Lakers. “We’ve shown who we are in terms of how we started the season. I feel like we can get back to that. That’s the confidence that has to remain. But we cannot give into this losing spirit of just finding different ways to lose basketball games.”

Curry’s comments emphasize that the Warriors are not where they once were, nor where they need to be; however, they also ensure those watching that the Warriors are not going to let this stretch of bad play define them. A combination of issues have contributed to this stretch of losses, with perhaps the most glaring being the absence of Draymond Green, but each loss counts the same in the standings. Steph Curry recognizes this, and vows to not let his team adopt a losing mentality going forward.
