The San Francisco 49ers entered Thursday's first round with 13 picks in this draft. They dealt two of those selections, a first- and third-rounder, to jump up to Dallas' spot at No. 18 and take LSU safety Eric Reid.
The 49ers set themselves up for just such a move like this -- they're still loaded up enough to make another Super Bowl run, and the extra picks left them able to find the players they needed. And Reid is a player they need, with Dashon Goldson gone via free agency and Craig Dahl penciled in as a starter at safety.
Reid is an absolute hammer out of the defensive backfield. LSU used him extensively against the run, bringing him up in the box to line him up as a linebacker at times. He hits with authority and leaves him mark on ball carriers. If there's a knock, it's that he can be too aggressive, both against the run and pass, running himself out of position.
But he'll be just the type of player Jim Harbaugh loves: tough, hard-nosed and constantly flying to the football.
Grade: B-plus.
