DeMaurice Smith says there must be negotiations to expand NFL playoffs

One of the hot topics of discussion around the NFL lately has been the possible expansion of the playoffs from 12 to 14 teams. Following the Super Bowl LII site announcement last week, commissioner Roger Goodell once again seemed very focused on making that happen.

However it's not just as easy as Goodell coming out and saying two more teams will be added to the fold. As NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith recently pointed out to ESPN, like anything else expansion would be a process that needs to be voted on and some changes will have to occur.

"If there will be an expansion of the playoffs, there will be a proposal by the National Football League pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement," Smith said. "That is a change of working conditions. Changes of working conditions must be negotiated with this union. And I haven't seen a proposal from the National Football League and I know that is a necessary precondition."
