Cornerback DeAngelo Hall said Washington's defense has been the "laughingstock of the league," the Associated Press' Joseph White reports.

Washington's defense allowed a league-high 478 points last season and opponents scored more than 40 points three times.

Hall's comments drew the attention of linebacker Brian Orakpo.

"We've been, I guess, the laughingstock of the league for a while on defense," Hall said Thursday. "So it's going to be nice to get out there with a new group of guys."

Standing at a nearby locker, linebacker Brian Orakpo overheard Hall's words and said in his booming bass voice "Laughingstock?" and added an expletive.

"Hey, Rak," Hall called out to his teammate. "We ain't been too good."

Washington has a new head coach in Jay Gruden. White reports Gruden has given defensive coordinator Jim Haslett "the green light to run a more aggressive scheme."

Hall, entering his seventh season with Washington, had four interceptions last season and returned two of them for touchdowns.
