Charles left Sunday's Week 2 loss to the Broncos with a high ankle sprain. He had just two carries for 12 yards before leaving the game during the first quarter. Charles returned to practice on Thursday, and his status for Sunday's game against the Dolphins is uncertain.
Charles led the league with 12 rushing touchdowns last season to go along with 1,287 yards.
With Charles out of the lineup, Knile Davis had 22 carries for 79 yards against the Broncos.
The Chiefs are 0-2 and have lost nine of their past 11 games after a 9-0 start last season. They will play the Dolphins in Miami on Sunday.
