Former NFL kicker David Akers said he "can't wrap [his] mind around" the report of his friend Rob Bironas driving erratically before his death last week, the Louisville Courier-Journal's Josh Peter reports.

Bironas, 36, died in a car crash last Saturday and witnesses claim he was driving aggressively. One couple alleges Bironas tried to run them off the road.

Akers, who knew Bironas for more than 20 years, said he spoke to him last week and saw no reason to be concerned about him.

"He seemed very positive," Akers said. "I didn't see a guy that was depressed in any sense or felt like was unstable in anyway at all."

Akers also said he had seen Bironas drive several times and never saw any dangerous activity.

"I'm not saying it didn't happen. It just doesn't make sense. … I've been behind him, I've been in the car with him and I haven't seen that side. I've just seen the side that chills out a little bit. I don't know. Unless he was just really good at having two different lives and that's not what I've heard from his other friends that have been around him as well."

Bironas played nine seasons for the Tennessee Titans.
