A police report issued Friday says Rob Bironas was intoxicated and driving over the speed limit before suffering a fatal crash on Sept. 20, according to a report from TheAssociated Press.

Bironas was driving 73 mph (more than twice the speed limit on that part of the road) with a BAC of 0.218 percent (Tennessee's legal limit is 0.08) before losing control of his car and crashing into trees, the police report says.

"The cause of the crash was Driver l's failure to maintain the proper lane and exceeding the posted speed limit," according to the report. "This case is now closed."

Bironas was taken to a Nashville hospital and pronounced dead.

The report says that four college students told police that Bironas chased their vehicle at high speeds and that a woman told police that Bironas tried to run her vehicle off the road before the crash occurred.

Bironas made 239 of his 279 field goal attempts over nine seasons with the Tennessee Titans, who released him in March.
