The San Francisco 49ers are expected to hire Eric Mangini as their new defensive coordinator, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Schefter reports that the deal is for three years.

Mangini was the 49ers' tight ends coach in 2014 after spending 2013 as an offensive consultant for the team. His previous background was on defense, as he was the New England Patriots' defensive coordinator in 2005 after spending 2000-04 as defensive backs coach.

The 44-year-old has also been the head coach of the Cleveland Browns (2009-10) and the New York Jets (2006-08).

The Oakland Raiders reportedly interviewed Mangini this week for their defensive coordinator position, and Mangini also previously met with the Washington Redskins.

San Francisco finished 8-8 in 2014, missing the playoffs for the first time in four seasons. The defense finished fifth in total defense (321.4 yards allowed per game) in the NFL and 10th in scoring defense (21.2 points allowed per game).
