The Cincinnati Bengals and linebacker Rey Maualuga have agreed to a new three-year contract, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Maualuga would have become a free agent next week had he not reached a deal with the Bengals. The 28-year-old has spent all six seasons of his career in Cincinnati after he was drafted in the second round in 2009.

Maualuga started 12 games last season, recording 61 tackles, one interception and five passes defended.

He has started 84 games over his career and has 497 tackles.
