The San Diego Chargers finished 9–7 for the second straight season and missed the postseason in 2015 following a third place finish in the AFC West.

During the off-season, San Diego added free-agent tackle/guard Orlando Franklin and wide receivers Stevie Johnson and Jacoby Jones.

Wide receiver Eddie Royal left in free agency to sign with the Chicago Bears and the Chargers also lost center Nick Hardwick, who retired.

The team will also have to make up for the temporary loss of tight end Antonio Gates, who was suspended four games without pay for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substances. Gates is allowed to practice during training camp and participate in preseason games.

The Chargers traded up to select running back Melvin Gordon in the first round of the NFL draft. The team's other draft picks include linebacker Denzel Perryman in the second round and cornerback Craig Mager in the third.
