Indianapolis Colts defensive end Arthur Jones will need ankle surgery to repair torn ligaments, reports NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

The Colts will consider placing Jones on injured reserve with a designation to return, according to Rapoport. Jones sustained the ankle injury in the Colts third preseason game against the St. Louis Rams.

Jones is entering his second season in Indianapolis. Last year, he played in nine games, starting three, and recorded 1.5 sacks with a forced fumble.

The Colts signed Jones to a five-year contract worth more than $30 million in March of 2014. Jones, a former fifth-round pick, spent the first four seasons of his career with the Baltimore Ravens.

Indianapolis opens the coming season on the road against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 13.
