New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said quarterback Drew Brees will not play in Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, reports Ian Rapaport of the NFL Network.

Brees injured his shoulder during the second quarter of New Orleans’ Week 2 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Brees was diagnosed with a bruised rotator cuff, but on Wednesday, he said he was “pretty confident” he would be able to play against the Panthers.

In 10 years with the Saints, Brees has never missed a regular-season game.

Brees has completed just under 63% of his passes through the first two weeks of the season, going 54-for-86 with 610 yards and two touchdowns.

The nine-time Pro Bowler has thrown for at least 4,000 yards in each of his nine previous seasons with the Saints.
