“We stand behind Kirk,” Gruden said, according to ESPN.com.
Cousins completed 25 of 43 passes for 196 yards with a touchdown and two picks in Sunday’s 34–20 loss to the Jets. He now has six touchdowns and eight interceptions on the season, and 24 touchdowns to 27 interceptions for his career.
“I’ll have to look at the film,” Gruden added, “[but] it was a little windy. He had a lot of pressure on him, really. There were a lot of things going on pre-snap that he’s got to deal with, getting the formations, the protections and all that. ... Overall you hate to pin this game on Kirk. I know he could have played better, but we had no running game whatsoever and Kirk’s not in that stage of his career right now, nor is anybody on our roster, to carry our team throwing the ball as much as we had to.”
Gruden named Cousins the starter for the entire season during training camp, while demoting 2012 Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III to third string. Griffin was active on game day for the first time this season on Sunday, but only because injuries left Washington with just 46 healthy players.
