Report: Giants negotiating deal with DE Jason Pierre-Paul
New York Giants are negotiating a deal with defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, reports NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Pierre-Paul met with the Giants on Tuesday with the intention of returning to the field, and ESPN’s Dan Graziano originally reported that Pierre-Paul’s representatives were in talks with the team about a one-year, incentive-heavy deal.
Pierre-Paul, who sustained extensive injuries to his right hand in a July 4 fireworks accident, was examined by the team Tuesday. Rapoport reported the team is “comfortable” with where Pierre-Paul is physically.
Rapoport also reported that if the two parties can reach an agreement, Pierre-Paul is likely to sign with the Giants on Tuesday and get a roster exemption for him to practice.
The six-year NFL veteran can sign a one-year, $14.8 million franchise tender at any point before Nov. 17. If Pierre-Paul does not sign before that deadline, he will not be able to play this season. The Giants cannot rescind the tender without making Pierre-Paul a free agent. They can, however, place Pierre-Paul on the non-football injury list if he signs the tender, and choose not to play him.
Pierre-Paul wanted the Giants to promise not to place him on the NFI list, Graziano reported. In exchange, the team would offer him a lower salary.
Pierre-Paul lost his index finger and a portion of his thumb in the fireworks accident, and also had surgery on his middle finger. The Giants first examined his hand last month, and reportedly came away fearing the injury could be career-ending. Pierre-Paul has remained optimistic that his level of play will be largely unaffected, tweeting in September that he thought the index finger wouldn’t impact his ability to record sacks.
