The San Francisco 49ers will bench quarterback Colin Kaepernick and start Blaine Gabbert against the Falcons on Sunday, Kyle McLorg of BayAreaSportsGuy.com reports. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmedthe report

After the 49ers (2–6) fell to the St. Louis Rams 27–6 on Sunday, head coach Jim Tomsula told reporters Monday he was “evaluating everyone” on the team, including the struggling Kaepernick, to start in Week 9.

Kaepernick, who has completed 59.3% of his passes this year, failed to throw a touchdown on Sunday for the fifth time this season.

Gabbert, a fifth-year pro out of Missouri, was with the Jacksonville Jaguars before being acquired by San Francisco in a trade.

The 26-year-old backup has seen action in one game this season, throwing for 38 yards and a touchdown.

The 49ers play the Falcons (6–2) at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
